What I’ve learnt over 29yrs: •MH services are underfunded •People with a mental illness are some the strongest people I know •We don’t support carers enough •Continuity of care is golden •Compassion and authentic hope vital •MH needs more funding #WorldMentalHealthDay

Today we are launching a campaign to #DropTheJargon. We know we use too many confusing clinical words because you’ve told us. So from now, we are promising to say what we mean so you can understand 💙

It’s not *solely* genetics. It’s not *solely* neurotransmitters. It’s not *solely* unconscious. It’s not *solely* trauma. It’s not *solely* cognitive schemas. It’s not *solely* learned patterns. It’s not *solely* familial. It’s not *solely* socio-cultural. It’s complicated.

Just out!! – a short piece on evidence on violence risk in schizophrenia: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/wp…. It’s the finale (I hope) of a very odd set of letters. Hear me out. 🧵 /1

On sentencing for Calocane (Nottingham killings). What's not been discussed much is that public safety is best served by secure hospital detention. Evidence base is robust. 1/

I appreciate that J.D. Haltigan, PhD 🏒👨‍💻 invited me to have an open discussion on substack on a range of social & psychiatric divisive issues, including areas where we disagree strongly (Mad studies, neurodiversity, stigma, trans identity, etc). Check it out: jdhaltigan.com/p/psychiatry-p…

It’s a week since the Govt published my report on suicide in young people with gender dysphoria. What did the reaction tell us about the necessary dialogue with the public on issues of evidence? 🧵

Much discussion about benefits of outreach teams in mental health. And promises to “learn the lessons” from the Nottingham tragedy - a phrase that infuriates families. But the real question is why we unlearned past lessons & what this tells us about future safety. 🧵

Short termism has been a very bad thing for mental healthcare Understanding history, context, themes and patterns is essential for all aspects of care including risk management Knowing the person, having a good relationship and collaborating as much as possible are all key

What is the place of the academic who is also a campaigner? We’re increasingly seeing this, it’s understandable - if you research something you care about, you want to go further. But some researchers on the most sensitive issues can’t be trusted. Hard to say but undeniable.
