Thinking about the loss of the freedom to disobey, it’s astonishing how rich the English vocabulary is for obsequious behaviour, esp. with lexical borrowings. We have flunkeys, minions, bootlickers, toadies, kowtowers, lickspittles .. it’s endless. Do other languages do this?

Congratulations! I only wish David Graeber were here to see it — it’s wonderful to see so many recognizing it as a work of true brilliance.

Just finished "The Dawn of Everything" by David Graeber (RIP) and David Wengrow. It's hard to overstate the importance of this book - it is a masterclass in expanding one's possibility space. So much of what we think we know about "humanity" needs to be reconsidered.

Korean edition just arrived and is absurdly beautiful. I love the toppled crown floating through the void … leading nowhere. #TheDawnOfEverything

This edited volume represents a serious effort to rethink categories of human political development, based on new archaeological data from across the world. 🙏 to Justin Jennings for inviting me to write a preface (in which I note a debt to Carole Crumley) routledge.com/9781032856926

NEW: Salman Abu Sitta is a Nakba survivor and historian of Palestine. Together, we digitally reconstructed his birthplace, the village of al-Ma’in, exploring its history and documenting how, in 1948, the village was destroyed and its people forcibly expelled:
