Lots of ‘pressing’ practices have 2/3 players chase the ball in a small area against 5/6 stationary opponents who have to get a number of passes then switch play to another box for players to chase again - this replicates very little of the coordinated skills of ‘pressing’ 🧵

'Most of what I do on the pitch comes from futsal' I guess there's a fair chance Rios ends up in the EPL for millions £. Then we'll get: 'why can't we produce more players like him? its because kids don't play street games anymore'. But futsal? hey, no way man, thats ludicrous.

If as Aimar says below 👇🏼 the connection between two players is unstoppable & about ‘feelings’…..why aren’t we coaching it? Why don’t coaching courses focus more on the interaction between players? What are the non-verbal communication cues the “SECRET CODE” between players?

Paul McGuinness (@paulmcg8) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Connections between players need coaching more than- developing a……. “SECRET CODE” To connect with non-verbal communication based on shared intentions and cues

Designing a football development curriculum similar to computer games gives clear prerequisite skills/ concepts to develop before moving in to the next level. Once players understand the non verbal cues of 2 player connections they can look beyond to the third player connection

Goalscoring schools may be a next step in Arsene Wenger’s coaching plan but what’s crucially missing is understanding the goalscorer’s ‘Storyline’ within games & team sessions - surveillance/plotting, losing markers, connecting with teammates, duel with gk & technical execution

“Going against the flow” to gain advantage Signal for a pass with a quick contrasting movement - attract your opponent to mirror your movement “Disguise with small late movements” to let the ball run past your body, then drag around as if exiting a ‘revolving door’ to score

Dragging is a ‘cornerstone’ skill, a prerequisite that sets up the next action: dragging to dodge & shoot - pass - cross ….that can then lead to a feign, disguise or turn - this is a great description by hockey coach Andreu Enrich which equally applies to football 🧵

The top players gain advantage by developing non-verbal cues to communicate with teammates & coordinate their movements to signal for a pass - this ‘Secret Code’ involves creating a CONTRAST in position - speed - direction - body language - to reveal the moment for the pass 🎯
