So ends my first semester of teaching at Augie on the most beautiful day of the semester. I was so lucky to have a wonderful group of students with awesome class discussions. I have so much hope for this generation of archaeologists! Now to prepare for field school :)

My first graduation where I wasn't a student! It was ridiculously windy (welcome to South Dakota), but I had a fantastic morning with my colleagues and students 😀

We have had a fantastic first week of field school! We've used non-invasive methods all week, including pedestrian survey and magnetometry. Next up: visits from some of our collaborating THPOs and limited subsurface investigations :)

The rain kept us from the field most of this week, but we did manage a teensy bit of fruitful shovel testing, and we are way ahead of our lab work 🙂 Next week....unit excavations and Tribal visits! #TeachingEthicalArchaeology #NeverendingRain

Field School Field Trip Day!! Pipestone National Monument has been an important site for quarrying catlinite for over 3,000 years! Gitchie Manitou holds the oldest exposed outcrops in IA, and the archaeological component dates to at least the Woodland period. #LithicsRock

We only had a three-day week for field school, but we crammed a lot in! Flintknapping workshop, flotation and artifact analysis, and the final day of unit excavations! #FieldSchool

For our last week, we visited Good Earth State Park, did more shovel testing, and finished up most of the lab work. This was a really fun group, and we got a lot done! The farm is such a beautiful place to do fieldwork. I can't wait for next year 😁 #TeachingEthicalArchaeology

The Indigenous People of North America have decided to go back to calling the Gulf of Mexico, “Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl”. It is what the Nahuatl People originally called it as it is the domain of the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, who is assoc w/water bodies, including the Gulf of Mexico.
