Francis Peregrino (1851-1919), born in Ghana, founder & editor of Cape Town’s first black newspaper, the South African Spectator. He tried to forge unity amongst people of colour using the Spectator as a platform.

Archivist Deidre Goslett presented a paper in a panel discussion at the IAML/AIBM conference held at Stellenbosch University giving an overview of music archives in Special Collections and assessing the extent to which they reflect the diversity of South Africa's music heritage.

Formal music collections of composers and performers mainly reflect the Western classical tradition, but broader archival holdings contain records of other genres and of indigenous music. (Photographs: Theresa Schoeman)

For example, the papers of composer and ethnomusicologist Percival Kirby (1887-1970), known his standard work on the subject (1934) and his collection of indigenous musical instruments on display at the SA College of Music at UCT. See digital showcase: ibali.uct.ac.za/s/pkmi/page/in….

A UCT-trained opera singer herself, Deidre sang a liberation struggle song dating from the 1970s found in the archives of the National Union of South African Students, illustrating that traces of different genres are located not only in collections classified as music archives.
