Francis Peregrino (1851-1919), born in Ghana, founder & editor of Cape Town’s first black newspaper, the South African Spectator. He tried to forge unity amongst people of colour using the Spectator as a platform.

A UCT-trained opera singer herself, Deidre sang a liberation struggle song dating from the 1970s found in the archives of the National Union of South African Students, illustrating that traces of different genres are located not only in collections classified as music archives.

The UCT W.H. Bell Music Library celebrated its 80th anniversary in style as the venue hosted talented vocal section student artists who performed a selection of songs by exceptional South African composers between 1pm and 2pm on Thursday, 1 August 2024 in front of a rapt lunchtime audience.
