Keep telling yourself no one will care about the costs consumers will bear from the tariffs. This is a tax on working class Americans. Full stop. apnews.com/article/poll-c…

REPORT: White House orders NASA to destroy satellite used for monitoring climate change, according to NPR The censorship campaign goes to space. I guess if you can’t SEE the climate changing, then it ISN’T changing. The stupidity is exquisite.

I want to share this new paper I've written, exploring how the firehouse of actions from this administration & Congress has impacted Black households. The focus is on Black households (and its targeting of them), but applies to the U.S. as a whole. bit.ly/45EidLs

The Trump family’s crypto venture has generated more wealth since the election—some $4.5 billion—than any other part of the president’s business empire. A major reason for the success is a partnership with an under-the-radar trading platform quietly administered by Binance, whose

D.C. religious leaders condemn Trump: "From the White House, the president sees a lawless wasteland. We beg to differ. We see fellow human beings—neighbors, workers, friends and family." "Safety cannot be achieved through political theatre and military force."

Tax shelter alert: OBBBA causes 29pp drop in tax rate for debt-financed corp non-res manufacturing structures (CRS, R48631). Also relaxed already-weak interest ded limit for easily collateralized structures. Scant debate, just full-throttle tax benefit. Empty buildings in 2033?

Trump, himself a felon, has a selective view of criminality. Capitol rioters, a triple murderer and two police officers who helped cover up the killing of a Black man all deserve a second chance. People accused of crimes in DC are irredeemable. Erica L. Green nytimes.com/2025/08/17/us/…

Two different but related things are happening now with the ACA. Enhanced tax credits expire this year. If Congress doesn’t extend them, out-of-pocket premiums jump over 75% on average. Insurers expect healthier people to drop coverage. So, they’re also hiking ACA premiums.

Matt Bruenig & I have had our share of policy disagreements over the years, and Kelsey Piper raises some important issues, but this thread focuses on what I see as some gaps and misinterpretations in her article & response to Matt, including the issue James Medlock raised here🧵1/12

She portrays the expansions in anti-poverty programs since 1969 as having produced disappointing results. But the data & research show some impressive gains, as I discuss in a recent Brookings paper, hamiltonproject.org/publication/pa… 2/12

Kelsey notes that under the best measure for tracking poverty changes over time (the anchored SPM), the expansion of the safety net has cut poverty in half over this period. That's an enormous accomplishment. The gains have been particularly large for Black & Latino children 3/12

And the creation or expansion of programs like Medicaid, CHIP, and the ACA has produced results, dramatically shrinking the ranks of the uninsured. For example, in 1988, nearly 25% of children were uninsured. In 2023, only about 5% were. 6/12

There's also substantial evidence from high-quality research showing important long-term gains for low-income children from receipt of Medicaid, SNAP, and the EITC in childhood, as the National Academy of Sciences, Urban Institute researchers, and others have concluded. 8/12
