Alongside the full research into strategic planning I was involved in, published on Friday by Royal Town Planning Institute I wrote a short blog about the journey we will need to take to deliver effective strategic planning across England. rtpi.org.uk/blog/2024/augu…

This 👇🏼 "Economic, social & environmental goals will be attained more readily by a planning system that is focused more on outcomes, less on process." Kate Barker (2004)

I chair a Min & Waste planning group (mainly counties who are the responsible authority) & it always amazes me how they're the only ones joining the dots between supply of aggregates & the growth agenda. We need an integrated approach #strategicplanning rtpi.org.uk/blog/2024/augu…

More from the insightful 2004 Barker Review by Kate Barker - this time about the value of a plan-led system but also the need to use this more effectively. The current Government needs to read this 20 yr old report to see how relevant it is today.

Between giving the Duty to Cooperate a bit more teeth in the short term and starting a journey towards universal coverage of strategic plans, we will eventually have a much better way of ensuring unmet housing needs are picked up- thankfully! planningresource.co.uk/article/188576…

A Government that listens to local partners & wants to work collaboratively to secure mutual benefits. Now there's something we haven't seen for a while!

Before regions were abolished in 2010 there was a co-ordinated effort to unblock sites across the SE. This required people with the right skills, public sector funding to deal with some of the blockages & leadership. It worked but needed all 3 components thetimes.com/article/e6d53a…

Catriona Riddell (@catrionariddel1) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The problem is that for some/many of these sites it is the cost of the site/development that's the problem. It could take millions £s to overcome the obstacles for each one. Meanwhile the planning rules & local political asks keep changing.

My latest Planning Magazine column talks about housing targets. My conclusion is that in an attempt over the years to simplify the methodology, we've forgotten that we're dealing with a very complex housing ecosystem which requires a more sophisticated response planningresource.co.uk/article/188642…

We mark, with great sadness, the death of Nicky Gavron. Nicky was Deputy Mayor of London twice and a Member of the London Assembly for 21 years. She made an outstanding contribution to our city and will be missed. Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time.

There are few people you have the opportunity to work with that impact on you like Nicky. She was a force of nature & London (& the SE) is a better place because of the work she did over decades - & was still doing right until the end. She will be v much missed. I will miss her.

Taking the first steps to reform outdated compulsory purchase compensation rules that inflate the cost of land to the benefit of speculators. I’m proud to have brought into force regulations that will allow for the removal of ‘hope value’ where justified in the public interest.

The deadline for responses to the Gov's proposed #planningreforms is looming. I've contributed to a lot of discussions on this & there's general consensus around the key issues but some concerns about implementation & sequencing. The positivity around reform remains, however!
