If we differentiate lessons, why do we give standardized tests?

We need to really know who are Ss are in & outside of school before we can ever effectively meet their learning needs. Teachers know that all the $$ on resources & programs is worthless if the relationship between Ts & Ss is not valued and respected.

How students feel about themselves and the person who is teaching them has the most impact on their learning.

In a great classroom, the students aren’t the only learners. The TEACHER is a learner also. When teachers are curious, when they are vulnerable, when they continue to grow… they provide stronger instruction, and they provide a great example to their students.

Think Wave 3 of this pandemic isn’t that bad? A month ago, @TeamRVH was caring for 3 COVID patients. Today, we have 53. Spoke with an ICU doc today who confessed “I’m scared. This is catastrophic.” Please, please follow all public health measures.

Math discourse is not just about Ss talking. It is about Ss thinking deeply about what they are saying & thinking deeply about what others are saying. Just b/c Ss are talking does not mean they are learning. We need teach skills that foster deep thinking and engagement.

There’s at least 1 thing you need to know about each of your students this year. But I’m not sure what it is -- you’ll have to get to know them.

Before you dive into course content this year, ask yourself: Do my Ss feel seen? Do my Ss feel connected? Do my Ss feel safe? As long as it takes, build the culture before tackling curriculum. The time is a worthy investment into learning.
