Blessed Mary, you stood with your Son, Jesus at the foot of the cross. Be with us, dearest Mother, as we confront the uncertainties of this time.

Today is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Saint Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton, wife, mother, foundress, the first canonized saint born in this country, and a friend and spiritual daughter of Bishop Simon Bruté. Please join me in praying for Mother Seton’s intercession.

Holy Mary, when you visited Elizabeth, her unborn child leaped for joy in the presence of your unborn Son, Jesus. Even in his mother’s womb, John recognized with the eyes of his heart what all of us are seeking—the One who alone can redeem us from the power of sin and death.

To make holy the flowing waters, John baptized the author of Baptism and was privileged to bear him supreme witness by the shedding of his blood (Preface). May we, too, bear witness to Jesus.

Our Lady of Divine Providence, help us to trust that God is with us and that he will lead us through the present darkness to the light of your Son.

“Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I cry to you all the day long. O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of mercy to all who call to you” (Ps 86). Our Redeemer is ready to hear us and to forgive our sins whenever we call on Him.

Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, intercede for all who are suffering from the hardships caused by illnesses of every kind. Show us the way to your Son’s healing power.

“Our soul waits for the Lord, who is our help and our shield, For in him our hearts rejoice; in his holy name we trust” (Ps 33). Rejoice in the Lord always!

Mary, Consolation of the Afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from every evil.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven” (Mt 5:9-10). We long for the peace and justice that can only come from God.

Holy Mary, Mother of the Church, on this Labor Day, teach us to help all men and women find work that befits their dignity, joins them more closely to one another, and enables them to serve their neighbor.

Jesus’ neighbors have a hard time accepting that he is the Anointed One sent by God to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord (cf. Lk 4:16–30).

Loving Mother, in these uncertain times, may we always turn to you for assistance when our spirit is weak and we feel lost and afraid.

“Blessed Gregory, raised upon the throne of Peter, sought always the beauty of the Lord and lived in celebration of that love” (Antiphon). Pope St. Gregory the Great, pray for our Church. May we seek the beauty of the Lord and celebrate it with reverence and great joy.

“Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need” (Pope Francis).

“I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (Jn 8:12). Help us follow you, O Lord. Dispel our darkness so that we can walk in your light.

Mother of Mercy, inspire us to confess our sins, do penance and return to Christ your Son. Help us to help others, especially those who are most in need.

“Brothers and sisters: Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you considers himself wise in this age, let him become a fool, so as to become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Cor 3:18–23). We are fools for Christ!

Mary, Health of the Sick, intercede for all who are suffering. Help us to reach out to those who are vulnerable by our prayers and by our support for the work of Catholic Charities, Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Healthcare and other social ministries.

“The designs of his Heart are from age to age, to rescue their souls from death and to keep them alive in famine” (Ps 33). Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us.
