This Sunday marks the first count of the WeBS winter core period, which runs from September to March (inclusive)! These seven counts are esp. vital for monitoring our winter migrants and answering important questions. So let's get out and count our birds!

Did my 2 Wetland Bird Survey counts this afternoon at Pendarves Lake & Cargenwen reservoirs. Very quiet birdlife, a few dragonflies around though. Mixed day for weather, unusual looking sun this morning at work, then thunderstorms captured brilliantly by Jo-Shreeve followed by sunshine

Huge bird migration shown by Ploddingbirder yesterday. House Martins streaming past Dungeness Power station. The bird observatory there Dungeness Bird Observatory reported 126,000 Swallows departing, 500 Sand Martin and 84,00 House Martin. To think, I was pleased the other day with 52 Swallow.

Where are the BTO Cuckoos now? 🤔 10 Cuckoos are in Africa, Cuach Torc seems to be heading south once more after his visit to Germany, and we’ve sadly had to say goodbye to Trent. Follow their journeys ➡️ bto.org/cuckoos 🌍 #BTOScience #Ornithology

with Tropical Storm Isaac crossing the Atlantic, having been upgraded to a Cat1 hurricane then downrated back to Tropical Storm, Cornwall tomorrow stands to be hit with torrential rain and gale force winds so I’m doing my BTO Winter Gull Roosting survey tonight

This photo shows the clear differences between adult Med and Black-headed Gulls. The Med in the foreground has white wings whereas the Black-headed has black tips. Also check the black "mask" behind the eye of the Med and chunkier bill. Brigit Strawbridge

With north-east winds for many at the moment, Redwing are starting to arrive right on cue to their historic reporting rates. Migrating to the UK at night if you are outside this evening listen out for their 'tseep' flight call overhead.
