We also test our expectation at a micro-level using granular, geospatial data on ISIS in Syria (district-level, monthly from 2013-2018). We find the group 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒 attacks on civilians by a large proportion in areas where they face violent competition.
