This game was literally scheduled for the entire purpose of helping the two teams get into the NCAA tournament. Why would Utah State *not* play to the final whistle?

Penny Hardaway on playing at Utah State: "It was very necessary to go to Utah State. If you have not gone to a Utah State home game, then you need to go. I can’t even describe what we had to endure and then play in front of. The loudest gym I’ve probably been in. A great

Penny on the atmosphere at Utah State's Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Saturday night: "If you have not gone to a Utah State home game, then you need to go." Calls the arena "the loudest gym I've probably ever been in."

Utah State dominated the basketball version of the "Middle Eight" outscoring Memphis by 18 over the last three minutes of the first half and first two of the second half. Tack on the +11 in the final 95 seconds, and Memphis actually outscored Utah State over the other 33 minutes.

Will one windmill dunk against a Q3 opponent change USU's tournament seed? Unlikely. Would adding an extra score or two to their margin of victory in the majority of their 25-27 wins make a material difference in efficiency metrics, which in turn influence seeding? Absolutely.

This means that in this mock selection committee exercise, Utah State was between the 23rd and 26th team selected to the field. Selection ≠ seeding, but a good sign of the Aggies being generally in the 7 seed range as of now.

Thursday bracket this week - Utah State appears as the top 7-seed, New Mexico is the first team out, SDSU a few spots further back. Aggies have an average rank of 25 in both resume and efficiency metrics, and have every opportunity to keep moving up. ustatebracketology.wordpress.com/2026/02/19/bra…

Utah State seeded #30 overall by the media mock committee despite not ranking below 28 in any of the seven computer metrics and with a 9-2 record in Q1/Q2. Yet those same media members question why the Aggies feel the need to play all 40 minutes and show out as best they can.

Playing with MW tournament seeding tiebreakers, and there is a plausible scenario which ends with USU the 1 seed over SDSU due to a 2-0 record against 10th place Fresno, while the Aztecs only played and beat them once.

Last bracket before the calendar turns to the greatest month of the year - Aggies fall a couple seed lines to an 8 and will need a strong finish if they hope to avoid the 8/9 game. SDSU and UNM both in the first four out, massive game tomorrow in the Pit. ustatebracketology.wordpress.com/2026/02/27/bra…

Odds are we're going to have to play UNLV twice in Vegas in a nine day span, and I am not looking forward to it whatsoever.

Brian Floyd (@brianjfloyd) 's Twitter Profile Photo

We're really two more BYU losses from a potential USU (7) BYU (10) first round matchup (BYU can't be an 8 or 9 because of Sunday scheduling).

Brian Floyd (@brianjfloyd) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Silver lining! UNLV is now likely to be out of the 8/9 game, so if we hold serve on Saturday, we'll probably play the loser of Saturday's Boise/CSU game. Not easy matchups, but better a team we swept by a combined 44 or 46 points than a team that swept us by a combined 37 points.

Last bracket before the first automatic bids are captured; Aggies free falling to a 10 seed on the seed list, but bracketed as a 9 here due to BYU's no-Sunday rule. New Mexico needs a win in Logan to have a chance at an at-large, and SDSU is all but dead. ustatebracketology.wordpress.com/2026/03/05/bra…
