K-2 teachers reported spending an average of 80 mins a day on literacy instruction and 31 minutes of that time was devoted to phonics. This falls slightly below the National Reading Panel's daily recommendation of 90 mins of uninterrupted literacy instruction for K- 2 students.

In Grades K–2 and older remedial readers all benefit from being taught how to use letter sounds & spelling patterns to decode words. The use of systematic approaches or programs of phonics instruction were found to be more effective than more opportunistic/responsive approaches.
