Numbers taking English A-levels in 2024 rose by more than 5% + numbers taking the A-level in Eng. Lit. grew by a v. significant 8%.Overall numbers of A-levels awarded only rose by 2.5% meaning English is becoming an increasingly popular choice relative to other subjects.  3/5

English Association (@englishassoc) 's Twitter Profile Photo

English is by far the largest Humanities subject at A-level. Overall, more students took one of the three English A-levels than any other Humanities A-level; around 30% more than took the next most popular (History). 4/5

This suggests a very significant reversal of recent trends which have seen numbers fall, along with those for other Humanities A-level subjects. 5/5 with thanks to Alex Thomson Plse visit our data page on website for more information englishassociation.ac.uk/english-studie…

Retweeting this in case any EY teachers & specialists, primary teachers or Heads, English teachers, SLT, academics, policy makers or others missed it. It’s about the whole lifecycle of subject English.

It was a pleasure to do this with Charlotte Hacking, explaining what the Manifesto for English is and why the organisations in Common English Forum were keen to set out some key ideas stretching from EY through to degrees in English & Initial Teacher Training.

This is a very familiar - and deeply depressing - view from a poet on what's going wrong in the teaching of poetry in schools. Well worth a read and a hard think about practices at KS3, as well as KS2. childrenspoetrysummit.com/2024/08/22/joh…
