NY Times deciding not to overestimate the educational level of their readers: “Some people called him the Jay Gatsby of the deli-meat industry - a reference to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s enigmatic protagonist.”

Enjoying the alternate John Cale mixes of the first Stooges record - he favors a trebly screech that sounds like it was intended to be heard through a kicked-in 8” speaker.

My record-shopping budget in 1975 didn’t extend to a lot of 4-LP sets, but it would have saved me decades of gradual discovery to have had this at the time: discogs.com/release/188492…

1970 sessions not released until 1974 and then the late 90s CD added three tracks with mostly different personnel - Andrew White switches to oboe, Hubert Laws and Gary Bartz step in on flute and sax - overall brilliant, a bit orchestral at moments with all the winds.

One thing I admire about Robert Sietsema is how he makes the effort to try things on certain menus that I would never consider - in his honor I chose the Baked Meatloaf at the Garment District’s The Joyce Public House - no regrets!

Lots of reasons to like this but I came to it wanting to hear more of violinist Toni Marcus who I first encountered on Carla Bley’s “Tropic Appetites”.

Preposterous "bucket list" item - to be the maracas player on a performance of this (also questionable whether I could physically do it - might be like marathon training - you start with 5 minutes and work your way up). youtube.com/watch?v=w0yTZm…
