Two more things you may not know: 1. No walking on the grass. 2. Do not tarry after Taps - the security guards don’t take prisoners 😉😎

Taking a photograph of Great-Uncle’s name on the Vimy Memorial to the Missing. Tomorrow we start following in the footsteps of her Heather’s father who fought with the Calgary Highlanders in WW2. This means a return to the Scheldt battlefields and the Reichswald. Can’t wait.

Sound off (too windy). The memorial site at SloeDamme #TheCauseway #OpVitality #Scheldt The bravery of the Canadian soldiers of 5th Bde 2nd (CA) Div who fought here 31 Oct/2 Nov 44 is off the scale. My client’s father was one of those men (D Coy Calgary Highlanders). Respect.

Standing on #TheCauseway #OpVitality #Scheldt with Walcheren Island in the background. Heather’s father was fighting in D Company Calgary Highlanders. Against all the odds he and the men of B Coy made it across (and came back again when the German counter attack threw them back!)

My tour following in the footsteps of D Coy Calgary Highlanders (5th Bde, 2nd (CA) Inf Div) is almost complete. But I discovered and just visited for the first time) this little gem; Schloss Seelenhof which is not far from Xanten, Germany. (Sound on).

Leslie Skinner took it upon himself to bury all of the Regiment’s dead &, because so many died inside the burnt out hull of a Sherman tank, it was a task he wanted to shield from the deceased’s comrades. He was a remarkable man - read his war diary The Man Who Worked on Sundays

If you are in the area this is a ‘must do’. Terry and the team have done wonders here and will remind you that Lochnagar is not the only mine in town 😉😎 (He might even make passing references to flying Eagles 🦅 🦅🦅)

105 wind chimes (one for every day of the #WinterWar) and 17,000 rocks (one for every death in the fighting at Suomussalmi). Only 900 odd Finish soldiers died in these battles (you do the maths). A striking art installation and memorial. #WinterWar #Finland #Resurgam

Everywhere I go here in Finland studying the #WinterWar I am reminded of the parallels with the current fighting in Ukraine where once again Russia is the aggressor.

The Latvian Academy of Sciences building in Riga. Locally known as ‘Stalin's birthday cake’ this example of Stalinist Architecture was paid for by ‘voluntary donations’ from Latvian people during the post-war Soviet occupation. Similar buildings can be seen elsewhere in E Europe

To be honest the Guardroom in Rheindahlen was never the most secure facility in BFG. As a frequent flyer Acting LCpl Bain already knew most of the escape routes. And let’s face it he wasn’t the right shape for tunnelling 😉😎

Sound on. A T-26 tank at the Winter War Museum near Suomussalmi Finland. (Please do not reveal its current location to the Russians - given their current situation they may try to reclaim it and press it into service in the Ukraine.) 😉😎
