As we prepare for the onslaught of misquotes, old white men tapping their fingers to gospel and SALES SALES SALES I am here to remind you that Martin Luther King Jr was a socialist. Let's dig into a few of his FULL quotes.

In 1967 at Riverside Church Dr. Martin Luther King reminded us that ""we must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. " 1/2

"When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered" IN 1967!!! yet here we are dominated by these three things. And on 2/2

his birthday (1/15) my email looked like he Thursday sales circular, 50% off in the name of economic freedom but sales are not that. They are consumerism and materialism at it's best. But let's keep going because that's only one and I have 30 min before I gotta get on my mat.

A few weeks ago someone TRIED to challenge me on my stance that Billionaires shouldn't exist, NONE of them including your faves. His challenge was well I don't see you talking about Rih to which I replied I SAID NONE and if you know me you know I've been critical of that. #MLKJr

also had thoughts about this. In 1963 through a collection of sermons titled Strength To Love Dr. Martin Luther King Jr mentions the idea of inordinate wealth TWENTY TIMES. He refers to rich fool and Lazarus, the churches obsession with wealth and the ill effect of capitalism.

on pg 159 "God never intended for one group of people to live in superfluous inordinate wealth, while others live in abject deadening poverty. God wants all his children to have the basic necessities of life and he has left in the universe "enough and to spare" for that purpose"

I have always believed that when Dr. King delved further into the caste system and started speaking on capitalism he became a real threat. Why? Because just like today when racism is the topic of discussion white people can wiggle their way out of it. That's when they have facts

and examples of their safety pin work HOWEVER when you talk about a system there's no way to talk around it because it's seen every day. For example throughout the pandemic we heard how much people were receiving from the government weekly, then we heard about people quitting.

because the received money was more than they would make at their gigs. The response was swift and judgmental SEE NO ONE WANTS TO WORK! Instead of WAIT are we under paying people and how do we fix it? America loves to do WRONG then blame the oppressed.

In 1967 during one of his final speeches Dr. King says "And one day we must ask the question, ‘Why are there forty million poor people in America?’And when you begin to ask that question, you are raising questions about the economic system, about a broader distribution of wealth."

And here we are 56 years later asking the same question. And sadly the numbers have risen, the conditions have worsened, we are further away from the mountain top that everyone claims to understand on this particular day. And with the effects of covid on the job market I don't

I have more to say, more to share on how to navigate capitalism w/o losing sight of community, but I'll leave you with this article from The Nation written by Dr. King in 1966 and say we as a community need to return to our leaders thoughts more regularly thenation.com/article/econom…
