16 March 2024 is the 250th birthday of Matthew Flinders. He’s remembered as the first explorer to circumnavigate Australia. An accomplished musician, his flute is now in the UK National Maritime Museum. He also aware of the benefits of dancing. Read tinyurl.com/34f3769j

MAYPOLE WARNING A warning in 1788 to the 'common people" who might be transported to the colony for taking maypoles for the purpose of dancing. NB. Dancing around maypoles with ribbons was invented in the mid-1800s as an exercise for children. #convictculture #CulturalHeritage

Convict pirates on the Cyprus Brig 1830. In Japan a samuri reported, “a strange pipe and singing could be heard” before the brig sailed away. “The sound was like that made by a child’s pennywhistle, nothing like a real flute. It was eerie,” . #TalkLikeAPirateDay
