Gave a moth trap a try in our small Exeter garden. Pleasantly surprised this morning with 4 Jersey Tigers and a nice Brimstone moth BC Devon Branch

Small, zippy and a lot less noticeable than their brighter cousins but I love these Black darter on Exmoor’s mires

Lovely bright green spark in the garden last night. Having just read James and the giant peach the kids were amazed to see a real glow worm

A fair few grayling on the paths at Aylesbeare this morning, one even deigning to show some forewing while upside down. A single clouded yellow also a highlight, after a narrow escape from a spiders web

I’m pretty sure I saw a group of around 15 Balearic off Dawlish W this morning accompanied by around 8 larger much darker birds. All wheeling as a tight group close to the water before moving west. Any thoughts on what the larger Shearwater like birds might be? Dawlish Warren

Found a new friend on Molland Common, Exmoor yesterday which is the impressively named Minotaur beetle. Some cuckoo too but less easy to photograph

Red throated diver at Broadsands briefly this morning, still showing a hint of red. Lots of Great Northern too but the BT if it was there eluded me

Going away without a camera always seems to turn up the goods. Yesterday a Black redstart right outside the front door and New Year’s Day kicked off with a pair of choughs a stone’s throw from the cottage. Wobbly binoc/phone shot
