I am willing to make one prediction: the current situation is not a steady equilibrium. China can go more repressive, e.g. militaristic autocracy. Or government makes some concessions but this invites more demands. The latter is a Tocqueville moment feared by many autocrats.

Nationwide protests against the Chinese government’s draconian COVID-19 lockdowns are significant for the simple fact that they have happened at all, not because of the danger they pose to the government, writes Yasheng Huang 黄亚生. trib.al/TCQLauX

I'm thrilled to share that starting in Fall 2024, I will be an Assistant Professor of International Relations at Lehigh University, and next year will be a Postdoc at the Niehaus Center for Globalization & Governance at Princeton University! I couldn't be more excited to contribute to these amazing intellectual communities.

I talked with Tom Hancock at Bloomberg on China's U-turn of COVID policy. “When the center can no longer observe local infections, the threat of punishment becomes not credible. At that moment, there is no more incentive for local officials to enforce those central directives.”

"I don’t really know how to think about this. We are really just saying, we are going to try to slow China’s technological advancement, as a country, because we think it is unsafe for us in the world if they pass us or match us in next-generation technological capabilities."

Congratulations to Princeton. Rory Truex is one of the most creative scholars and kind human beings. I've learned so much from working with him. Can't wait to see what comes next!

7/ There will be new US export controls and further disclosures around the payload on the balloon. Beijing has a choice in how it responds and how much public attention it focuses on these events. The more Beijing feeds the story, the deeper of a hole it will dig. END.

US-PRC relations are off track. Risks of conflict are rising, while benefits from the relationship for American and Chinese citizens are receding. Ideological arguments don't carry answers. Evidence-based, interest-driven thinking is needed. yalebooks.yale.edu/2023/03/16/int…

Nicely done! We need more well written articles like this one about the future of the Phillies even as we focus on the majors.

Four U.S. destroyers monitored Russian and Chinese ships on a naval patrol near Alaska … I don’t think it’s in our interest to use terms like ‘provocative’ and ‘aggression’ in relation to this exercise. We support freedom of the seas…or we don’t. wsj.com/articles/russi…

She blocked the assailant's knife with her body, saving the Japanese children on the bus. She's a real hero. The nature of the incidents in Jilin and Suzhou remains unclear, but we must stay vigilant against xenophobic sentiments. R.I.P.🙏
