Good morning! Tax day is it - I do the bookkeeping myself but the rest of the stuff I like to do together with advisor. It is good to get an outside opinion about how my farm economics are running and maybe learn some more new tricks

What’s something your local farm coop could do (other than lower prices, that’s a given) to be more valuable to your farm operation?

Why would anyone calve in January? #ranchlife I see people who don’t calve in Jan throwing out some ridiculous answers. The truth is different for every ranch so I can only tell you our why, but I can promise you that it rarely has anything to do w/trying to put on extra pounds.

Our operation has a very specific schedule dictated largely by our grazing allotments, couple that math with running a registered herd that needs to have 2 cycles of breeding to guarantee they’re bred to our bulls after ai-ing and our steep mountain terrain. #ranchlife

Well maintained cattle (sufficiently fed, ample access to fresh water and a proven mineral and vaccine program in a well maintained environment) thrive and raise frisky resilient calves any month of the year. #ranchlife

The key for our operation is feeding first thing in the morning, keeping deep snow plowed, providing fresh bedding in new spots as often as necessary & running health checks daily. We calve for three cycles so we’re still calving in March and it doesn’t get any easier. #ranchlife
