Truly great to be celebrating our @QAPrizes award for research in climate & extreme weather, aiding vulnerable communities in the global south with new forecasting & warning systems University of Leeds Earth and Environment at Leeds @ICASLeeds @SRILeeds
Today's the last day of the final GCRF African SWIFT project meeting. Great to get some snaps from our Kenyan team! @icpac_igad Kenya Met Department 🇰🇪 📸
The @African_Swift, co-led by National Centre for Atmospheric Science colleagues, is delivering a step change in extreme weather forecasting in Africa. "We’re building capacity of local agencies to apply and develop scientific knowledge – and to give communities hazard warnings." says @DougParkerMeteo.
1. Nowcasting is using observations to describe the current weather and predict weather for the next few hours. Kenya Met Department 🇰🇪 through the GCRF African SWIFT project have developed the FASTA: Forecasting African STorms Application. See play.google.com/store/apps/det… to display nowcasting info
The #EOAfrica series of webinars are back for 2022, starting with the 1st on ‘Nowcasting’. Organised with GCRF African SWIFT, participants will get an overview of Nowcasting in #Africa and discuss the next-gen #MTGI1 🛰️'s impact on the continent. Register at: bit.ly/3JZaHgR
Let's congratulate our colleagues at University of Nairobi on the recent inauguration of their training lab for weather and climate science, partly supported by the SWIFT-NESST funding tinyurl.com/bj9hud6c This will be used to train students on satellite data interpretation and nowcasting
New paper finally published!!! The dynamics of dry and wet monsoon MCS formation over West Africa. Great way to start 2023! World Meteorological Organization published Guidelines for #satellite-based #nowcasting in #Africa. 🛰️ #MTG fully included 👨🎓 Know-how from GCRF African SWIFT 🌩️ Experience from #African forecasters ✍️Many inputs from EUMETSAT colleagues #EarlyWarning4All library.wmo.int/doc_num.php?ex…
Fantastic to see GCRF African SWIFT nowcasting feeding into these World Meteorological Organization guidelines. Satellite nowcasting can provide urgently needed early warnings for all. @DougParkerMeteo National Centre for Atmospheric Science Andy Dougill
A new set of World Meteorological Organization guidelines for nowcasting in Africa draw on our @African_Swift programme to help improve African weather services. Nowcasting is a process where satellite images can be used to provide severe weather warnings at short notice. ncas.ac.uk/new-internatio…
