It’s literally the job of NME to be ahead of the curve. Picture Parlour are an emerging band who already have a following. Worth remembering Arctic Monkeys had thousands of fans before they released a single. There’s more to it than monthly Spotify listeners.

AM aren’t the band everyone wants them to be but that’s not their fault. They’ve grown up and developed; that’s why they’re headliners. Nobody actually wanted to watch a 37 year old bloke sing about sneaking into nightclubs and winding up police, did they? #glastonbury2023

AM and Loyle Carner are the standouts for me. Arlo Parks and The Murder Capital should have made the shortlist too, as should The Japanese House, but you can’t have it all

Very good piece, and it only begins to explore the problems of a London-centric culture. The BBC play a part, but it’s the hands of the wider media to recognise that the north is a place that exists too.
