Great example of why this principle is ripe for motivated reasoning. Very obviously, the "private and voluntary counterfactual" is just open borders. One person wants to work a job or rent an apartment, another person wants to work it or live there. End of story.

I find it weird how people dehumanize individual choices in this way, attributing them instead to the yearning of an abstract "market". The yearning comes from people! And yes, it's obviously good, as a general rule (with rare exceptions), for people to get what they want.
