Hello from on board MSF's Geo Barents- I've joined to report on a search & rescue mission in the Central Med. More than 30,000 people have now died or gone missing in the Med in the last decade, IOM figures show (& the real numbers are likely much higher). I'll update this thread

Sunset today on the Geo Barents. I’ve actually been on the ship since Monday morning after boarding it in Sicily (the last few days have been trainings & briefings). They are now sailing south & tomorrow morning I believe it will reach the search & rescue zone.

Other figures: 11,651 *people* have been intercepted & forced back to Libya so far this year, with support from the EU. 150,855 since 2017. Another c. 30,000 were forced back to Tunisia in the first half of 2024, acc to Alarm Phone: alarmphone.org/en/2024/07/29/… x.com/IOM_Libya/stat…

This morning we were contacted by the group again. They said: «Every time we are arrested by the Greek army... we are beaten and women are harassed.» Stop the violence against this group and assist them NOW!

MSF crew on standby today in case they were needed for a rescue. There have been two cases (afaik) so far that we have started sailing towards - one boat (I believe) was reached by the Italian coastguard & one intercepted by the Libyan coastguard.

There were 2 rescue operations by the MSF ship today. The 1st was odd: 49 people found on a boat but 2 wearing balaclavas (seemingly smugglers) stayed on at the end. 2 unmarked black boats, who said they were Libyan coastguard, were on the scene too. More: x.com/MSF_Sea/status…
