Things found at an open-air marketplace in downtown Kampala. You wouldn't find any of these titles in a large bookstore here.

This issue features a wonderful mix of prose, poetry, and art, with essays on Ugandan tribalism, the nettlesome legacy of Uganda’s ruling party, Sol Plaatje’s South Africa, Julius Nyerere’s faithless followers, and the homelessness of Ugandan modernist art:

Today my brother Ivan defended his doctorate at the University of Antwerp. After six years of hard work and many years of suffering, he becomes the first PhD in our family. He is almost certainly going places as a political ecologist with a distinct perspective.

Yesterday Ivan Ashaba defended his PhD, which provides an extremely rich understanding of the past and present of militarised conservation in Uganda. Trailblazing research, that will be read widely. Dr. Ivan Ashaba, it has been a tremendous honour to join the ride (1/3)
