We saw a little bit of maritime history this morning, the Waverley seen here departing from Southampton. The Waverley is the only sea-going passenger paddle steamer still operating anywhere in the world. Waverley was built in the 1940's and originally worked on the Clyde.

Out with students from Bournemouth Uni yesterday and caught this Mantis Shrimp (Rissoides desmaresti). This is a 'spearer' mantis shrimp that impales its prey on a barbed fore-limb. This type of shrimp is a.k.a. the 'Thumb Splitter' and must be handled with care...

A sunny afternoon for newly started 1st year OceanEarthUniSoton University of Southampton marine biology and oceanography students taking the first boat practical of their courses.

RV Callista returns to the water after a bit of unscheduled maintenance at Wight Shipyard Co in Cowes, Isle of Wight. The next couple of weeks will be very busy catching up on all the missed work.

So it's a crisp January day in 2024 as we finally finish catching up with the missed sessions following our unscheduled maintenance at the end of 2023...

Students are out today undertaking geophysical survey work in Southampton's Western Docks and Southampton Water. They are using acoustic equipment to measure and image the seafloor, and to make seismic images of the sediments below the seabed...

Back in the West Country, working out of Plymouth with students taking the OceanEarthUniSoton Advanced Oceanography Fieldwork module. The onboard labs were briefly empty this afternoon, with everyone out on deck enjoying the sunshine.

RV Callista has just completed a messy week of mud sampling. University of Southampton students studying Biology and Marine Biology have been sieving through countless boxes of mud and identifying all the organisms they find. Pic 3 shows one of the worms, a Sand Mason.

Yesterday we had one of the best days for years, the sea was virtually flat and the Sun was blazing all day... University of Southampton students studying OceanEarthUniSoton subjects were onboard Callista doing fieldwork in the sun. Even the dolphins were unusually lazy in the afternoon.
