New preprint: In a fun collaboration with the Sternberg Lab, we reveal the evolutionary origin of eukaryotic RNA-guided RNA modification (Nop5 and Prp31) in recently characterized bacterial IS110-family transposons. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Sad. Even coming from an R1 U, some folk will always be looking over your shoulder for someone more important. But please keep going! With an interesting talk or poster, the people who really care about your topic will still be eager to talk to you.

The perfect is indeed the enemy of the good. But a thesis should be good! It will be publicly available, even if it takes some work to find it, and it should be a document you can be proud of.

The ever amazing Artyom Egorov in our group has made a new visualisation tool for comparative genomics. Makes particularly beautiful images of phages, plasmids, other MGEs or regions of prokaryotic genomes 😍 biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh…

"All these grants" for under-represented trainees can become an unfair tax. Why are some trainees pressured to spend much more time than others on applications? Writing 1 proposal is educational even if rejected. Writing 4 failed ones is a demoralizing waste of time.

An experimental census of retrons, now published in Nature Biotechnology. We synthesized more than a hundred new retrons and put them through their paces, improved recombineering rates and precise editing in human cells up to 40%. nature.com/articles/s4158…

Do you think that doing science costs the same anywhere around the world? The answer is NO! and as illogical as it may sound, it costs more to do science in low-resourced countries than in high income countries. A couple of examples from my own experience as a PI in Mexico (1/🧵)

Time for a positive random observation: when I see the migrant families who are staying in the shelter near my place, the adults are usually paying more attention to their kids than to their phones.
