Mesophotic coral reefs are seen as havens for shallow reefs amidst climate change. New study tested if deep-origin coral larvae can survive on shallow reefs. Results suggest low potential for them to recruit to shallow reefs.

Deeper coral larvae did not survive when transplanted onto shallow reefs.

These results could provide hope, as they suggest that shallow water corals may be able to survive on mesophotic reefs if shallow-water reefs become less hospitable as a result of climate change.

Was a great Minerva-Gentner Symposia of 'Brining the sea to Berlin'! Thanks a lot to BESSY@HZB, Bettina Wolter, Tali Mass Mass Coral Lab, Paul Zaslansky, Antje Vollmer, and all the participants!
Happened despite of a cyber attack on HZB. But we got to see the storage ring!

Did you know cGAS isn't alone in its mission? It's part of a large family of innate immune sensors that sense distinct PAMPs, produce varied nucleotide signals, and control complex signaling networks! 🧵Check out our latest story on cGAS-like receptors: cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

Though our data reveal rapid symbiont acclimation, reduced growth rates and limited capacity for skeletal modification will likely limit the potential for mesophotic larvae to settle on shallow reefs.

Despite hosting different algal symbiont genera that initially photosynthesised like we expect 'shallow' and 'deep' algae to, strong photoacclimation to our experimental light conditions was seen within 35 days in juveniles.
