Here’s the thing: Kyiv’s air defense kept the city safe last night (guests included), shooting down all 31 of the missiles Russia fired at it. But it’s running out of air defense missiles — some fear before the end of this month. Step up, Speaker Mike Johnson Congressdotgov.

Last night, University of Guelph Senate, I spoke against the abolition of the BA Major in Spanish/Hispanic Studies. Most Senate resolutions pass w/ 95%+ support; my arguments reduced support for getting rid of Spanish to 50-51%. Plse RT if you support universities having Spanish programs!

Happy Earth Day! In another 15 days my next book, The Birds That Audubon Missed, will be published by Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster on May 7. I'm grateful to the renowned artist/ornithologist David Sibley for his generous and insightful comments about the book.

Who the hell is out there teaching people to say "MEM-wahhhhh" for memoir? Like, that's not even close to French, if that's what you're going for. This pronunciation exists at the precise intersection of pretentious and wrong.

Tuesday morning writing advice from my reread of Stephen King’s ON WRITING, as I settle into the desk: “Sometimes you have to go on when you don't feel like it, and sometimes you're doing good work when it feels like all you're managing is to shovel shit from a sitting position.”

It’s National Go Birding Day! Tools like eBird & Merlin Bird ID make finding and identifying birds easier than ever. There’s never been a better time to be a birder. Here’s my story on falling in love with birds in the golden age of birding for Scientific American scientificamerican.com/article/we-are…

#topoli Bryant Park, but really in parks & squares all over Manhattan: lots and lots & lots of folding chairs & tables. If you put them out, people will come & spend time in public space. It’s fascinating & depressing that the City of Toronto is unable to do something so simple.

Name another city that's grown more culturally impoverished as it's grown like Toronto. Planetarium gone, Ontario Place gone, and now the Ontario Science Centre. Provincial animus to blame for all. All the nice things for children are from half a century ago and falling apart.

The TTC is falling apart. It doesn't matter how many new lines we build if existing service levels stink and fares are too high. Maintenance is spotty leading to unplanned system shutdowns and it is overwhelmingly, consistently dirty. Operations matter. The TTC used to at least
