i haven't seen enough being made of the fact that 2024 is the 200th anniversary of the discovery of the effect.

in 1824 joseph fourier was the first to note that the presence of an atmosphere acts to increase a planet's surface temperature.

A reminder that horses are being culled to keep Kosciuszko NP creeks looking like the one on the right (brumby-free area), not the left (brumby stronghold)

Also a reminder that brumby advocates said 'BUT THERE ARE ONLY 3000, YOU'LL WIPE THEM ALL OUT!'

They were wrong... again

Native vs non-nature is an absolute distinction for many in conservation

I like this paper for questioning that, & asking if we can afford to be so purist in a time of rapid global change onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…

This is the only place Australia ever tried to build a nuclear reactor.

Earthworks were started and footings installed.

But luckily Liberal Party PM William McMahon put a stop to it in 1971.

It’s now Booderee National Park!

Here is a satellite image, captured today by Planet, showing the site of the in Papua New Guinea that is believed to have killed 670 people. The location of the crown of the landslide is [-5.3825, 143.3651]. It is 200 m wide and 500 m long. It moved towards the north.

Like Trump, 'trickle down' economics/freakanomics is a greatest-ever scam! An 'undead', though obvious, con from day 1! ‘Everybody has not won’: trickle-down economics was an idiotic idea. How do we fix the inequality it causes? theconversation.com/everybody-has-… via The Conversation - Australia + New Zealand

The summer's worst sequel: Canadian Wildfires 2. Coming soon to skies near you.

Currently 103 major fires burning (39 out of control), and we're still only in May.

Great explainer to help you anticipate what's next.

Brutal heatwaves ongoing simultaneously.

Mexico City (Tacubaya Observatory) yet again breaks its heat record (34.7°C). Data since 1877 and sits 2,309m above sea level.

India is breaking records in the north-east while the north-west is reaching 50°C.

More records will fall.

“In Western Australia, a severe marine heatwave struck in 2011, wiping out kelp forests along 100 km of coastline. These forests have not recovered.”

“All amplified by climate change”.

Thank you Jeff Berardelli for spelling this out.

I encourage all reporters and other communicators to explicitly connect this heat wave to climate change.

Insect migration is truly one of the world's wonders!
Here's a blizzard of small cabbage white & clouded yellow butterflies migrating through a narrow Pyrenean pass.

All are using the sun as a compass as they migrate south for the winter!

Why didn’t anyone warn us???? …. Oh wait. We listen to economists.

“As we warm the planet, we are going to see climate disasters pile up and compound against each other because of the lack of resilience in our infrastructure and government systems.” theguardian.com/us-news/articl…

Sadly, this is all too widespread.

Whether it’s climate deniers, extreme “doomers”, or cult-like believers in their perfect “solution” (even when evidence says otherwise), there's a lot of hate out there aimed at scientists in my field…

“Here’s my problem with the whole ‘canary in the coalmine’ framing. It suggests that we’ll actually do something with the ‘early warning’.

And so far, we haven’t.
