.Fawaz Gerges: 'Where do you expect the 1.3m Palestinians in Rafah to go, [to] what part of Gaza that has been razed by Israel'

Gerges goes on to say that protests in the US are having an affect on the actions of the administration there.

Israel’s assault on Rafah will lead to unimaginable suffering and many more children starving and dead. Again, the ball is in Biden’s court at a moment of reckoning. If he does not now bring this bloodshed to an end, he will go down in history as an enabler in chief—and failure.

'The Middle East was reimagined as a Cold War chessboard, which left a legacy marked by dependencies, weak political institutions, low levels of civil and human rights protection, lopsided economic growth and political systems prone to authoritarianism.'

I am praying for the safety of student protesters. They are showing bravery and a fierce moral urgency. They are rightfully fed up with the continuing bloodshed in Gaza and refuse to accept the imperial cynicism of Western governments.

As a lifelong teacher and academic, it deeply pains me to see repression of campus protests. Students must be allowed to peacefully organize and voice their opinions. University leadership should fiercely protect this right, not target their own students for arrest and expulsion.

Freedom of speech and peaceful assembly are basic constitutional rights.

Student protesters — whether you agree with them or not — have a right to safety & fairness. Responding to peaceful demonstrations with weapons and riot gear escalates tension and makes everyone less safe.

In the ‘60’s we had sit-ins protesting Vietnam, racial injustice, & supporting justice for campus workers. We were evicted - not arrested or suspended. Columbia’s behaving abominably. Ruining the lives of students isn’t how a university should act haaretz.com/us-news/2024-0….
