STS Workforce on Health Policy Vice Chair Susan Moffatt-Bruce hosted Rep. Seth Moulton today at Lahey Hospital, touring the new UMass Chan-Lahey Regional Medical Campus & discussed key #STSadvocacy priorities, including lung cancer screening and healthcare workforce challenges.
We talk about wellness and protecting our personal/family time as much as possible… and then every single surgical society meeting spans a weekend (Sat - Tues for example). Maybe I’m the only one who thinks that is suboptimal! American College of Surgeons SAGES is in Long Beach in 2025! AATS
I’ve been very impressed with Justin, who I got to meet at this past AATS meeting. I actually thought he was already a resident based on how productive he has been with Brendon Stiles and Montefiore Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Good luck Justin Olivera. (See you in 5-7yrs for thoracic match 😉)
Very proud to participate in this exciting study using the STS (The Society of Thoracic Surgeons) thoracic database (GTSD). We can now study long-term survival via GTSD-CMS linkage! Here we study risk factors for long term survival after esophagectomy in Medicare patients.

It’s been a while since I trained in cardiac surgery, but is CABG / surgery eval not even on the list of considerations for prox LAD in 65yo diabetic anymore?! Amy G. Fiedler, MD George Tolis Ourania Preventza Patrick Myers
Elliot Servais, MD, FACS George Tolis Ourania Preventza Patrick Myers It should be! I agree with George Tolis comment and would add that it “takes 2” to build collaborative heart teams.. mutual respect btwn cardiology and CT surgery to ensure doing the right thing with the information at hand for the patients

Great study! Look at the OR for BMI > 40, wow! While a modifiable risk factor, likely not modifiable in the timeline btwn diagnosis and treatment. May impact extent of resection discussions Lisa Brown, MD, MAS, FACS Brian Mitzman, MD MS FACS Tom Varghese Jr. MD, MS, MBA, FACS, MAMSE 🇺🇸 The Annals of Thoracic Surgery
Nice study Important finding aligns w/2013 study from STS database showing heart failure & renal insufficiency = 2 strongest independent predictors anastomotic leak! Need to study indications/impact of preop cardiac interventions on esophagectomy outcomes Tom Varghese Jr. MD, MS, MBA, FACS, MAMSE 🇺🇸
Ron Barbosa MD FACS Resilience I think comes from accepting cases have an emotional impact, allowing yourself to feel terrible, then move forward. And modelling emotional intelligence so training doctors mcan see a more healthy way to deal with the bad parts of the job.
Important study looking at race and ethnic disparities in Lung Cancer Patients using the The Society of Thoracic Surgeons database. Study lead Dr Watkins (Ammara A. Watkins, MD MPH) discussed with Dr Antonoff (Mara Antonoff, MD, FACS) on CTSNet Definitely check it out! #lcsm #MedTwitter
Our Canadian colleagues are doing much better than us here in the states with preconditioning (“prehab”) for pulmonary surgery patients. What is holding us up? Brendon Stiles Tom Varghese Jr. MD, MS, MBA, FACS, MAMSE 🇺🇸 Shanda Blackmon, MD Susan Moffatt-Bruce Jonathan Spicer MD PhD Biniam Kidane
Elliot Servais, MD, FACS Brendon Stiles Tom Varghese Jr. MD, MS, MBA, FACS, MAMSE 🇺🇸 Shanda Blackmon, MD Susan Moffatt-Bruce Jonathan Spicer MD PhD Biniam Kidane Money! Pre-hab programs are expensive and it’s not always funded by government/insurance agencies. Much of our pre-hab program at McGill is supported by research $$ and philanthropy.
