Flashbacks of the early days of the pandemic when we (at the COVID Tracking Project) were screaming WHERE’S THE DATA?!
We’ve learned nothing. 😵‍💫

USDA/CDC still heedless of what The Great Influenza author John Barry calls the *fundamental lesson* of the 1918 pandemic:

'Those in authority must retain the public’s trust. The way to do that is to distort nothing, to put the best face on nothing, to try to manipulate no one.'

Unpopular opinion: If a zoonotic virus emerges but its control, or even transparent information on the situation, will interfere with industrys interests, the safety of all of us will be thrown under the bus. Looking at you, wildlife traders, fur farms, meat & dairy industry

At the start of COVID, the US was quick to point fingers at China for being slow to share data, including genetic sequences. The USDA's lack of transparency and delay in sharing sequences from H5N1 infections in cows is eroding whatever moral ground we had to accuse others.

I recall reading this at the time as a trainee.

I do not get how anyone can claim we knew so little in Jan 2020

Just because some people either didn’t read or refused to believe in airborne - the rest of us suffered the error of the refusal to mitigate airborne

WHAT WE DON'T KNOW

1. The long-term impact on other illnesses

2. Why some people's conditions persist

3. What diagnostics and therapies can help restore the immune system

49% OF COVID INFECTIONS ARE ASYMPTOMATIC…

…which means you may not know if you are actually sick.

This is why it's important to take a multilayered approach to protect yourselves & others:

▪️Masks
▪️HEPA air filtration
▪️Good ventilation
▪️Up-to-date vax
▪️Rapid tests

OTHER ILLNESSES

▪️SARS-CoV-2 can also activate other viruses that have been lying dormant, like Epstein-Barr and herpes viruses.

▪️Studies have found kids with prior COVID-19 infections had a greater risk of RSV infections.

▪️The more COVID-19 vaccine doses you get, the lower the risk of Long COVID.

THIS LOOKS LIKE...

1. Altered immune system cells which are more inflammatory.

2. Viral reservoirs and fragments which can set off a continuing immune response.

3. Immune dysregulation & chronic inflammation

4. Triggered autoimmune conditions, blood clots & latent viruses

COVID’S EFFECT ON THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

🔥 This is an excellent series of graphics from Yale School of Public Health explaining what we do (and don’t) know about Covid’s effect on the immune system.

Much of this is informed by the work of Dr. Akiko Iwasaki (@VirusesImmunity).
