tinlab at Boston University (with a new logo! 🪄) is recruiting PhD students for F25 and/or a postdoc! Our interests include meaning, generalization, evaluation design, and the nature of computation/representation underlying language and cognition, in both humans and machines. ⬇️

Do you want to understand how language models work, and how they can change language science? I'm recruiting PhD students at UBC Linguistics! The research will be fun, and Vancouver is lovely. So much cool NLP happening at UBC across both Ling and CS! linguistics.ubc.ca/graduate/admis…

Chuffed that Kanishka Misra 🌊 on “controlled rearing” to learn the “a beautiful five days in Miami” arxiv.org/abs/2403.19827 construction won an EMNLP Outstanding Paper Award! And delighted that the ACL community saw fit to recognize a paper about an odd little ling construction.

I'm in need of NINE emergency reviews for ACL ARR. Over 1/3 of my reviewers are nonresponsive, I think that's a personal record 🙃 Please let me know if you can take on some of these!!

There's a known bug in how we compute "word" probabilities with subword-based LMs that mark beginnings of words -- as pointed out by Byung-Doh Oh (w/ Will Schuler), & Tiago Pimentel and Clara Isabel Meister I'm pleased to announce that minicons now includes a fix which runs batch-wise!

I’m hiring PhD students in computer science at Columbia! Our lab will tackle core challenges in understanding and controlling neural models that interact with language. for example, - methods for LLM control - discoveries of LLM properties - pretraining for understanding

Much of the research around SAEs these days reminds me of papers that assessed probing classifiers more thoughtfully. Here’s one that can inspire how to assess SAE tradeoffs: aclanthology.org/2020.emnlp-mai… By Tiago Pimentel Naomi Saphra 🧈🪰 Adina Williams, Ryan Cotterell (who’s no longer here?)
