The sequence of holes/pars on the Old Course at St Andrews is a big reason why play flows so well. How a course's design can affect pace of play. linksmagazine.com/the-golf-archi…

Something I missed a couple of days ago - Mike Keiser will receive this year's Bob Jones Award from the USGA, given to those who "demonstrate the spirit, personal character and respect for the game exhibited by Jones."

The Players and its 'fifth major' status: 1980s-2015 - Don't be silly, you can't just buy a major. 2016-present - You certainly have my attention, but there should only be four and, if there ever was a fifth, it would have to be played somewhere other than US/UK.

Watched 'Tommy's Honour', teared up, had dinner, watched it again, teared up again. I love the movie, but it never fails to make me weepy.

My Dewey Decimal library classification system is as bad as my memory, which means I occasionally discover two copies of the same book (who knows how long I've had these?) Want the paperback? Very lightly soiled. DM me your address. Just pay for shipping.

It feels very strange to suggest a £280 green fee is something of a bargain (there are no genuine bargains here, especially in the left column) but, given how good it is and its proximity to London, you sort of feel Swinley Forest could/should be charging more.

Here's an architecture book that isn't mentioned often but is a great read/addition to your shelves - Fred Hawtree's anthology of essays from Colt, Mackenzie, Fowler, Braid, Low, Hutchinson... As with Paul Daley's superb architecture series, there is much wisdom within.

Watching in England, there were five non-golfers in the room and three golfers. Everyone stayed up to the end. A couple of the non-golfers will definitely be giving it a try soon. Nothing can grow the game like that.

Loving reading the English papers (God I've missed them) talking about McIlroy's amateur career, his upbringing, and how his parents sacrificed so much to let him play...as if he hasn't been a pro for almost 20 years already. and just burst on to the scene yesterday.

Tiger would have shut it down after 11 - middle of the green to the house - probably even earlier. But McIlroy's mix of calamity (13, 14, 18) and brilliance (15, 17, 18 playoff) was pretty exciting.

Still thinking about the Masters (probably will for a while yet). It struck me that before he won, McIlroy was an even better version of Johnny Miller - a supremely talented ball-striking phenomenon who didn't have the record his talent merited. Now McIlroy is all-time top ten.
