Exciting news! Michaël Aklin and my new provocation is out in Global Environmental Politics. We make a simple but far-reaching claim. **Empirically, climate politics is NOT primarily about collective action or free-riding**. A quick 🧵on why we've all been prisoners of the wrong dilemma 1/

I doubt there are many outside of Norway that know that the Norwegian pop group A-ha was critical in the introduction of electric car incentives in Norway. I certainly didn't. Read on...

Carbon pricing has been less effective as a driver of technological change than anticipated. A study by @JLilliestam et al. shows that achieving net zero emissions will require more sweeping, systemic changes: iass-potsdam.de/en/news/carbon…

Sales of electric #BEV cars rose more than 130% in Europe in 2020, and over 40% globally, even as overall car sales were down by 20%. They could account for the majority of car sales by 2030, even if the forecasts of the IEA are more modest. spglobal.com/platts/en/mark…

2020 was a great year for the climate. Use of fossil fuel was down. More important for the long run, investment in the #energytransition was up by 9% over 2019, for the first time exceeding half a trillion dollars. altenergymag.com/story/2021/01/…

Chewing on this: We can't simply ban fossil energy immediately because it would impose too much pain on fossil energy users, i.e. everyone. Promoting renewables first can make a future ban painless, thus attractive. But is only possible if promotion itself is relatively painless.

My colleague Oscar Van Vliet + collaborators just published a nice paper looking at electric trucks. Given expectations for battery sizes in the next few years, batty electric trucks will be able to cover close to 100% of trips, even longer distance ones. mdpi.com/1996-1073/14/4…

To allow electric vehicles to reach full market penetration, policies need to deal with the fact that most Europeans rent, rather than own, the space where they park their cars at home, and can't install a charger. ethz.ch/en/news-and-ev…

How much CO2 removal would be needed to stay on 1.5°C track in the face of rising #AgriculturalEmissions. And what it would cost. For Europeans: affordable. Congratulation to my PhD student Nicoletta Brazzola on her first publication! journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…

Positive political movement for #EVs in Switzerland : proposed legislation to require apartment building owners to wire their parking garages for chargers. The article cites my group's research, so maybe social science makes a difference! nzzas.nzz.ch/wirtschaft/ele…

Direct support policies work better than carbon prices for the same reason a lever helps you lift a heavy weight. A lever converts a small force exerted over a wide distance into a large force over a narrow distance. Carbon price are like using raw muscle power to lift a car.

Our most recent results about the costs of climate protection: they are negative! Even if climate change didn't exist, the transition to non-fossil energy makes economic sense. ethz.ch/en/news-and-ev…
