"The French Lesson: Conversation", an award-winning Halas & Batchelor ad made for Zizanie produced in the late 60s-early 70s. I'm afraid I can't tell you who animated on this, but the art direction is very striking

The Hole (1962) Storyboard, dir. John Hubley Hubley's Oscar-winning anti-war film from the perspective of two construction workers. The dialogue was completely improved by jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie and George Matthews. Pretty sure most of this was done by Bill Littlejohn

Dean Elliott is a guy I consider one of the worst cartoon composers ever ... yet I "love" his work. I'm fascinated by how bad it is in a guilty pleasure sense so, I made this. I call it "The Dean Elliott Super Happy Fun Times". Enjoy!~ (🔈Volume Warning, btw)

Excerpts from the voice recording session of Chuck Jones' "Nelly's Folly" (1961). Singer Gloria Woods is being directed here by Jones himself pushing her to be more personal in her takes. Also featured on the track is staff composer Milt Franklyn backing Woods on the piano.

Isolated Music Cue from "Snoopy Come Home" (1972) The Sherman Bros (with arranger Don Ralke) wrote a more traditional film score that still understands the Midwestern sensibility of Peanuts just in a more "Disney" execution. The usage leitmotifs in this bit are very strong

Scott Bradley cues from "Cellbound" (1955), dir. Tex Avery & Mike Lah. Bradley was a highly skilled composer and added so much life to the MGM cartoons. His energetic compositions use the same "Mickey Mousing" techniques as Carl Stalling but with his more avant-garde tastes.

Let's do a musical breakdown of Scott Bradley's MGM scores! Starting with, imo, one of his best: the Droopy masterpiece, "Deputy Droopy" (1955) We open with a cheesy scene setter for a western short. The music establishes the local, seniority, and our sleazy villains (1/??)

Bit of a warmup to a larger piece: it took me this late in my life to discover BLAME IT ON THE SAMBA, and I’m making up for lost time because this has been on my mind the entire day!!

Watched BAMBI recently and, like every other person on the planet, was blown away by the art direction—I’ve really been itching to hone my painting skills lately, so I’m indulging in a series of BG studies to ride on that inspiration. More to come!

Something to commemorate the 78th anniversary of BABY BOTTLENECK, which is in a neck-and-neck race for my favorite cartoon ever made! (I’m sure you can guess the other.) I’ve been sitting on this idea for years and am so happy to FINALLY have it come to fruition!
