Including a chapter by me with a personal view of the future of remote sensing… written in 2019 with a minor update in 2022. Hopefully not too out of date!

Sentinel-1 data show a magma intrusion occurred north of Fentale volcano, Ethiopia, on around 27 September, causing many felt M4+ earthquakes. Today's acqcuisition shows deformation is now decreasing. Please follow Ethiopian experts at IGSSA for more information.

The Sentinel-1 time series for Fentale shows 1) a dyke intrusion in 2015, 2) slow uplift in 2017-2025, 3) a new dyke in 2024 further north. The 2015 dyke did not cause an eruption - more info from IGSSA, UK COMET & BGS here: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10… sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

UK COMET Modelling of the 2015 intrusion gave a top depth of about 5 km. Preliminary analysis of the 2024 satellite images based on the width of the graben suggests about 4 km for this one.
