Inspired by Spring near the end of his short life, Vincent van Gogh painted these blossoming chestnut trees in the picturesque village of Auvers-sur-Oise outside Paris in May 1890. He died two months later, making these among his final paintings.

Happy birthday to brilliant British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), as clever as his sleuth (no surprise). His birthday always reminds me of the greatest actor to portray Sherlock Holmes - Jeremy Brett - who starred as Holmes on television in the 1980s-1990s.

A beauty of a painting by American expatriate artist Charles Sprague Pearce (1851-1914), “Lady with a Fan” of 1883. With Manet, Degas, and Whistler, Sprague used Japanese objects to evoke a “japanesque” painting style, including kimonos, fans, and porcelain in a European setting.

Delighted to share my new Evansville Living article on Evansville Museum's engaging Picasso ceramics exhibition. This little-known side of his art complements everything Picasso at the museum. The remarkable Polish pianist Maryla Jonas (Jonasówna) was born May 31, 1911. Her life was marked by tragedy that she acknowledged gave her playing extra gravitas. An overview of her life & her precious discography are linked in the comments, including her sublime Chopin mazurkas

Happy birthday to English author Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), whose Wessex Tales in English Literature led me quickly to the novels Return of The Native (1878) and Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891). And the rest, as they say, is history. Thomas Hardy Society

Happy birthday to ageless musical miracle Martha Argerich! Uniquely beloved - perhaps in part because she is such a 'people' person: a fiercely loyal friend, who loves to party, to laugh (and gossip!). And perennially modest: 'forgive my sins', she says, as she walks onstage...

Today is the 81st anniversary of the D-Day invasion, June 6, 1944. On that day, 4,414 Allied troops were killed. The crack unit of 181 British airborne troops led by Maj. John Howard were the first whose feet touched French soil that day.
