Erika McEntarfer has devoted her career to public service. She has conducted herself as BLS Commissioner with great integrity. There is no evidence whatsoever that BLS data are politically biased. By incorrectly asserting that the data are biased, President Trump is undermining

The totally groundless firing of Dr. Erika McEntarfer, my successor as Commissioner of Labor Statistics at BLS, sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the statistical mission of the Bureau. For a full statement opposing this move, read: friendsofbls.org/updates/2025/8โ€ฆ

Firing the BLS Commissioner โ€” the wonk in charge of the statisticians who track economic reality โ€” is an authoritarian four alarm fire. It will also backfire: You can't bend economic reality, but you can break the trust of markets. And biased data yields worse policy.

When they didn't like what they were hearing, Argentina intervened the statistical agency and faked statistics of inflation and GDP under the peronist government lead by Cristina Kirchner (2007-2015). Not recommended. brookings.edu/articles/consiโ€ฆ

My fear is that ordinary Americans are not experiencing the firing of an experienced, non-partisan, leader of a statistical agency as the major earthquake for the United States that it is.

BREAKING: FIRE is suing Secretary of State Marco Rubio, challenging the laws he is using to target lawfully present noncitizens for speech protected by the Constitution. No administration should be able to deport lawfully present noncitizens for their opinions.

Argentina went completely off track because of decisions made in a few years by an elected โ€” through a democracy โ€” leader who pursued autocracy rather than venerating democracy. And that should be a cautionary tale for everyone in the business community and everyone involved in

Forthcoming in QJE from my colleage Carolina Arteaga: effect of opioids on N. Am. politics hard to overstate. About 1/4 of all deaths for those under 55 recently are overdoses. Cancer mortality in 90s -> big increase in local opioid prescriptions. Result is *big* change in politics. 1/3

Trump's federalization of the DC Metro Police Department and deployment of the National Guard is an attempt to gaslight the American people so he can seize more power. It will do nothing to make us safer. Here's my full statement.

Put a useful idiot in charge of economic statistics and we suddenly get a reason to suspend our most valuable and reliable measures, just as the economy is slowing. It's cooking the books by erasing inconvenient numbers. Indefensibly destructive, economically harmful, and markets

This is irrelevant to the legal argument. But it's obvious what they're trying to do --- they're trying to convince the court that it would simply be too destructive to follow the law and that they should therefore stay out and leave the matter to POTUS and Congress.

7/7: Only under ideal conditions could USTR tariff revenues cover the additional spending proposed under the BBB. In actuality, such a scenario is unlikely. Retaliation and economic decoupling would likely erode the tariff base over time, causing tariff revenues to decline.

Can you explain to me why Bin Laden, who destroyed two buildings, was hunted by the CIA for years โ€” but a war criminal who bombs cities in Europe every day is having a meeting with the President of the United States?

Bill Clinton proves Marco Rubio is lying, right here, clear as day: WE forced Ukraine to give up their nukes, cruise missiles, and strategic bombers: WE promised to protect Ukraine from Russia; WE made Ukraine vulnerable. So yeah, THIS IS OUR WAR.
