Because of out-of-sight, out-of-mind, if I take a note and place it where I can’t see it, I might as well have not written it in the first place. This means notes I take have to remain visible or become visible again at some point in the future (9/17)

However, if every note I take remains visible all the time, eventually I stop seeing individual notes and start seeing them as an overwhelming pile. This is why it is about controlling what's visible and what's not, rather than just making everything visible. (10/17)

One way I do this for my own notes is by setting reminders, notifications, and alarms. For example, the moment I finish a recurring task (such as yearly physical, oil change, or vaccination), I set an event in my calendar to schedule the next one (11/17)

Another way is to make information visually distinct and engaging. Often my brain won't allow me to read long notes or engage with every item in an ADHD chaos pile, but I can still scan over it for things that stand out (12/17)

Making the most important information stand out visually can help with finding it again, even if my brain doesn't let me actually read it. However, I can't do this with everything or I'm back in the overwhelming chaos pile again, but this time in technicolor (13/17)

Finally, ADHD also changes my approach to organization in another way: the need for novelty. Boredom is a major barrier that prevents us from sticking to the plans we set for ourselves, and this goes for keeping organized too (14/17)

People with ADHD cannot start taking notes one way and stick to it. We need to change how we gather, store, and use information over time. Changing how we take notes, or how we organize them, isn't a sign of a failure. It's resiliency (15/17)

For me, as soon as I start noticing that I'm avoiding using my organization system alarm bells start ringing. Where this alarm used to be the start of piling on guilt and shame, now it's a reminder to shake things up to keep it interesting and novel (16/17)

While there is no one true system that is going to keep every person with ADHD organized, organization is only helpful if we use it. So my final advice is stop fighting your brain. Instead, make your approach to organization as friendly to your brain as possible (17/17)
