As a dad, I try to love my wife in front of my kids, get my kids up on Sunday mornings for church while she’s getting ready, and drive so she doesn’t have to. Notice, this was all about how I’m treating my wife. Not the kids. This is how they learn.

Moms, please be ok with dads pushing them to go further, try harder, and not settle for mediocrity. It’s their job. Rough play and teasing prepare them for adversity.

Dads, please be ok with mom comforting them after you have delivered unpleasant consequences. It’s their job. They aren’t “siding” with the kids. Moms are making sure kids understand that you both love them and that the discipline is to direct, not to harm.

Please give children age-appropriate autonomy. Too much too soon only sets them up for failure. Not enough restricts their growth. Find the balance. Yet through it all, please pass on your values to your children. This gives them identity.
