On 05 Jul 1948, HMIS Delhi was delivered from Britain and was commissioned into the SpokespersonNavy Erstwhile HMIS Achilles was commissioned into the Indian Navy as HMIS Delhi. Post 1950, she was redesignated as INS Delhi.

She was the first in the series of cruisers that were acquired for the Indian Navy and named after major Indian cities. The ship was converted into a Training ship in 1971.
