happy anniversary to the kent state massacre, i guess. cops are celebrating the best way they know how.

I've had a few people tell me they support student protestors who 'follow the rules'. Doesn't work; administrators simply change the rules to justify their assault.

I took an entire class on Gandhi at The University of Chicago. I first read Letter From a Birmingham Jail there. I was the president of the debate team. Violence against protestors flies in the face of everything the University purports to stand for.

These two are constantly broadening and challenging my worldview. Amazing to see them in conversation with one another.

Believe it or not, it actually got much worse before it got better. By 1964, 74% of respondents thought mass protests hurt the cause.

In 1966, 63% of Americans had an unfavorable view of MLK.

By 2011? Only 4%.

Wrote this piece before everything went to hell last night. But it's even more appropriate now. We've seen over and that heavy-handed police responses only escalate tension. We just don't ever seem to learn from it.
