I believe in the right of universities to make investments WITHIN REASON. But they cannot be allowed to endanger others with their investments.

I've had a few people tell me they support student protestors who 'follow the rules'. Doesn't work; administrators simply change the rules to justify their assault.

Decades from now, the polite mainstream will claim the legacy of the protester who stands against the jeering white boys - just like it currently claims the legacy of protesters who stood bravely decades ago.

But let’s remember where the polite mainstream stands in the moment.

about 10 years ago the NYT and AP stopped using the word “terrorist” because it was broadly understood, even by normie centrists, to be a selective and racist watchword without coherent meaning. Now it’s everywhere again, just casually thrown about. Another popular 2002 throwback

I took an entire class on Gandhi at The University of Chicago. I first read Letter From a Birmingham Jail there. I was the president of the debate team. Violence against protestors flies in the face of everything the University purports to stand for.

These two are constantly broadening and challenging my worldview. Amazing to see them in conversation with one another.

Believe it or not, it actually got much worse before it got better. By 1964, 74% of respondents thought mass protests hurt the cause.

In 1966, 63% of Americans had an unfavorable view of MLK.

By 2011? Only 4%.

There’s this weird slippage people do where by “peaceful” they mean “lawful” but then they want to use MLK as an example and seem to forget where “letter from Birmingham Jail” was written from

Just an FYI for people referencing the Civil Rights Movement as the ideal and legal means of protesting, students sitting in at lunch counters, in movie theaters, in bus terminals and marching in public parks were violating laws and ordinances and agents of the state were also…

In his letter from Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King, Jr., told us the white moderate “is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice” and said this is someone who “prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.”

Wrote this piece before everything went to hell last night. But it's even more appropriate now. We've seen over and that heavy-handed police responses only escalate tension. We just don't ever seem to learn from it.
