Honoring the everyday lives of those who call #ChinatownNYC home, our Art of Storytelling project features family oral histories with our neighbors. T!C presents "Who He Was." Nancy Sing-Bock tells us the story of her father An Van Sing and his journey from Shanghai to New York.

Nancy’s father An Van Sing married Jean Leach. Most immigrant Chinese men in the 1950s-60s married American women as there were very few Chinese women due to the Chinese Exclusion Act. Being biracial, Nancy was often confronted by questions like, “What are you?”  #ChinatownNYC

Nancy recalls how her father who spoke Shanghainese was challenged to communicate in #ChinatownNYC as most people in the 50's were Cantonese. As many new Americans experienced, the struggles of coming to a new country could be very isolating.

“Who He Was” is a story about how important family was to An Van Sing. It is stories like An Van Sing’s that show us how communities like ours in #ChinatownNYC are shaped and how special it is to have individual’s like these to be part of them.
