Mariam Habib won Overall Winner 2023, sponsored York St John University. Studying BSc Health & Social Care University of Huddersfield whilst taking care of her disabled son. Faced abusive marriage while pregnant with 2nd child. Taking year out to raise 2 children, she returned to studies a year later.
Mohammed Hamad won Overcoming Life Obstacles award, sponsored by University of Bradford. Born with rare genetic disability, Fuhrmann syndrome which has left him in a wheelchair. Graduate in Accountancy & Finance from University of Bradford. Works for the NHS as a Purchase Ledger Officer.
Samiyaa Ahmed won Not-for-Profit sector award, sponsored by Barnardo’s. Volunteered in refugee hubs in York & Newcastle, taught English to refugees, volunteered in refugee camps in Calais, Greece & France. Completed internship with MP, aspiring to work in the Human Rights’ sector
Sadiya Salim won Achievement in Public Sector award, sponsored Home Office. Worked leedscitycouncil in Child Friendly Team. Supported Syrian & Afghan
refugees by giving them activities. Volunteered in charity Barca - delivers transformational services to children & families.
Safah Aftab awarded Achievement School or College, sponsored Bradford Council. Despite having ICF syndrome, rare genetic disorder, completed her GCSEs & went to college. Diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma she underwent chemotherapy. Her ambition's to study Human Rights Law at university
Mohammad Malik, 24, was awarded Achievement in Education, sponsored by LanguageCert. Studying PhD in Politics University of York. Organised trips to refugee camps, helped Afghan refugees to integrate in York. Malik provides mentorship for students who want to enter higher education.
Mahnoor Akhlaq awarded Achievement in Media, sponsored by LOCALiQ UK. Multimedia producer Channel 4 News. Journalism graduate from University of Leeds, Royal Television Society Bursary recipient, presents & covers stories on homelessness, poverty, & societal issues on Channel 4 News
Mohammed Saeed 19, won Achievement in Arts & Creative Industries, sponsored by National Science and Media Museum. Excluded from school, referred to Pupil Referral Unit. Suffered mental health struggles in lockdown. Found his passion in dance improved his well-being. Performing Arts Bradford College
Nusaybah Tufail, 22, was awarded #theYAYAS2023 Achievement in Health, Mental Health, or Healthcare award, sponsored by the University of York.
