This is one of the silliest diagrams in education, and it’s a strong field. It has no evidence base to support what it insinuates, and the prison/school pipeline has no UK model. It’s so dumb. But people fall for it.

With 25% of young offenders having reading skills below that of the average seven-year-old and 60% of the prison population having literacy difficulties (Clark and Dugdale, 2008) it would suggest that poor reading instruction leading to illiteracy may be a more honest graphic.

The Reading Ape In Japanese, the main verb is always at the end of the sentence. In English, the main verb can be put where it will be the easiest to understand and remember. So I have occasionally wondered which language has more beautiful sentences. Japanese or English?
