Approximately 213 million people live with the effects of #traumaticbraininjury but treatments are limited. We fund #research into the development of functional direct contact intra-cranial and intra-spinal phototherapy devices, to potentially develop disease modifying treatment

Patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension have raised #brainpressure which can be reduced with weight loss. We fund #research investigating the affects of bariatric surgery on levels of GLP-1 a hormone, in #IIH patients, and if this influences pressure Andreas Yiangou IIH UK

#Stroke is also a key research area of the MNTRF. The structure or physiological causes of dementia after stroke is not clear. We fund a project to study whether the use of modern #MRI scans after stroke would be valuable to predict long-term cognitive and memory outcome.

We have also funded a two part series of #teaching videos for junior doctors and #neurology registrars on how to perform lumbar punctures with the use of ultrasound guidance. The videos will be used along with hands on teaching in the simulation skills centre.

We also support the Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Disorder Day, a UK symposium showcasing clinical approaches and research currently being conducted on idiopathic intracranial hypertension (#IIH) by both clinicians and translational scientists. IIH UK @IIHDrBirmingham Dr Susan Mollan

#Stroke is a global public health issue and the leading cause of disability in the UK. A pilot study led by Dr Lauren McCluskey tests if saliva sampling can identify stroke causes rapidly at the bedside. Projects like these can improve #diagnosis and #treatment of patients.
