That cabinet minister Pat McFadden has done the morning broadcast rounds claiming huge numbers are “signing on” to PIP daily demonstrates why the government has a rebellion on its hands: the cuts are not simply immoral - they are based on blatant lies few MPs wish to repeat.

I joined 108 MPs in opposing the Universal Credit & PIP Bill. 10,000 in Salford alone could be affected—and they’re terrified. Overall, it’s estimated the cuts could push 400,000 more into poverty. It’s not right. The cuts must be scrapped.

Unlike wealth, PIP and UC are almost entirely recirculated into the economy. Every penny is spent on goods and services, from travel, to equipment to care. It is never squirrelled away in some investment bank, it also enables many disabled people to stay in work. 1/

Today I spoke to BBC Tees about the proposed PIP cuts and why myself more than 100 Labour colleagues are opposing them. The policy will plunge hundreds of thousands of people into poverty, including children, and there's been no reasonable consultation. We need to press pause.

What baffles me and makes me doubt the sanity of millions of Brits, is the fact that folk on low incomes say they'll vote for a party - Reform- that would introduce an insurance-based US-style health service and tax laws that benefit the super-rich. Thick does come close to it.

This has now shifted beyond discipline or fiscal credibility. It’s a punitive, flawed policy that weakens the safety net, harms disabled people, and risks destroying Labour’s moral authority & electoral future. Voters aren’t just watching what we cut - but who we protect.
